Michael Hodgkiss Poop 05

Welcome to another new year. Hope is well with everyone. Surely you are awaiting the choice as remembered by the one and only me.

JOHN COLTRANE “ONE DOWN/ONE UP”
Two NYC dates recorded in the last year of the true “power” quartet. This “fab four” was cooking. The first cut catches ‘em in a full jam, Garrison working the strings, Elvin, McCoy, and then John….Double set…live…what mo’ do ya need.

PETRA HADEN “ Sings THE WHO SELL OUT”
The mo’ ya listen, the better it is. Most people who do solo works have others on it. Petra takes it to a new level…no one else, just her recorder and voice. Buy it, burn it, whatever…get it.

RYAN ADAMS and The CARDINALS “COLD ROSES”
Also affectionately known as COLD NOSES to a few of the uninitiated. Some say rather than doing 5 sides, one great one would do. Did anyone ever tell Jackson Pollock to stop throwing paint? No. I couldn’t really decide which was my fav song on it because each was so diverse. PS: get “29” asap.

BECK “GUERO”
This lil’ maniac has a great time making recordings. Taking this as a companion on a recent long trip, the cd spent mo’ time in the machine than I did in the drivers seat. He does it all. Foot tappin’ fun stuff.

THELONIUS MONK QUARTET WITH JOHN COLTRANE “LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL”
The story of how this live recording was tracked down in the dark, dingy basement of the Library Of Congress, Washington, DC is truly a tribute to the American Way. Glad that my tax dollars have been going to such a great cause as recording historic events, and then forgettin’ ‘bout’ ‘em while they rot below, whew…what a great country. Been wondering as of late…What else is down there? “Hey, Senator, got any live Beau Brummels?”

LUCINDA WILLIAMS “LIVE AT THE FILLMORE”
Another live recording in my selections. This little double set ditty showcases Lucinda’s words, voice and geetar. Her playing is exceptional, and I even bought the hat. Got one for my bro’ also. Happy Kwanmaschuk, Spiff. “I’m gonna change the lock on my front door” says it all.

FIONA APPLE “EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE”
Geez, and I just thought she had great eyes, and no talent. Was I wro…Wow, I almost said wrong…..mistaken. She does have great eyes, as a matter of fact she should take the name GREAT EYES, beat that other Bright Eyes tag. The story about the true recording, record company, new producer, resequencing, yea, yea, yea….bull. Both are superb in their own rights. So I will leave up to yo’ ‘magination, which one I like better, if infact I do.

JOHN PRINE “FAIR AND SQUARE”
Taking way too many years between recordings due to a serious medical concern, Johnnie boy comes back still with his sense of humour and slanted look at the world in tact. Skewed slightly off kilter, he is still “CRAZY AS A LOON”

CALEXICO/IRON AND WIRE “IN THE REINS”
This reminds me of the DEAD/NRPS days. Question: What is this all about? I understand the SXSW connection and all, but not having the liner notes and not caring to find out ,makes it all a bit confusing. Needless to say, this is good. I don’t care who they are, what they do, who plays on what, who wrote what….just listen boys and gurls.

WILCO “KICKING TELEVISION”
If ya’ have seventeen hours put this baby on. A bit Loooooong winded at time, takes too long to start a tune, long jams, etc , etc, it is still Wilco and any Wilco is good Wilco by me. Another live recording picked by me. Maybe that is where the true musician lives. Any one can make mistakes in the studio, do another take, fade it out, re-dubb, ..live, ya’ git’ only one shot at it. Look what one mistake did to that wonderful superstar ASHLEY SIMPSON.

Previews for ‘06…Get Rosanne Cash’s BLACK CADILLAC. If the title tune don’t give ya’ chills , you are one heartless mo’fo.. Strokes ain’t bad either.

As always, Til’ we meet agin”
